Stone Rise treads — single-piece 40 mm monoliths with natural rock-split edges Garden steps almost never fail because the stone failed. They fail at the joint between the tread and the facing. A Stone Rise step has no such joint: the whole tread is one 40 mm piece of stone with rock-split edges, mortared onto a masonry riser. Nothing to loosen, no facing to come away, and no seam for water to get into. Four stones, 4 or 5 ft long, 12 to 16 inches deep.
